East Idaho Fly Fishing Report: Spring is coming to the Rockies and it is bringing some wonderful early-season fishing opportunities! The unseasonably warm weather has allowed for great fishing on most of the regular haunts that are open to winter fishing with the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River being one of the hottest. Most people are floating and walking stretches from the Ashton Dam down to the lower reaches. Nymphing and streamer fishing has been the name of the game, however, some of the warmer afternoons have been bringing decent midge hatches and fish have been rolling on dries and emergers sporadically.
We have been getting a lot of questions regarding the Teton River, and it has thawed and is trying to fish. However, with the warm weather came the mini-runoff and the water clarity has not been optimal with 6-inch to 12-inch visability. I have personally seen phone pictures of some massive rainbows and cutthroats coming to anglers chucking streamers and catching these regularly spooky fish off guard. If the weather persists, look for this watershed to stay relatively dirty as a pretty good runoff is expected with the amount of snow left on the hills.
We should look forward to an amazing fishing season as the mountains are filled with dense snow. We are at near 100% of regular snowfall for the year and the three major bodies of water-fill (American Falls Res, Palisades Res and Jackson Lake) are all between 68% and 87% respectively as of this week. In fact, Palisades Reservoir is expected to bump the South Fork of the Snake River to 3,500 cfs come the beginning of April, which will help the spring spawn kick off for the the Yellowstone Cutthroat. The South Fork of the Snake River itself has been decent with those nymphing bead-head midges and stonefly patterns, but has remained a distant second to how well the Henry’s Fork has been fishing. With any luck, we may have a spectacular mayfly year, as well as a hopper season, so keep your fingers crossed and your lines in the water!
