Boise Local Fishing Report for March 12th

Owyhee River Fishing Report

Skwalas have begun to make their annual appearance as adult sightings have been confirmed! As the temperatures warm up into spring, expect the river conditions to improve. Water levels are still holding at winter flows of around 30cfs, but that flow should bump somewhere in the first couple weeks of April. With the low flows, a preferred technique would be to run a Skwala adult and drop a small midge or Baetis BH nymph below. The midge activity has been consistent, and if you head out to the river on an overcast day with some rain, you may run into a prolific BWO hatch. Make sure you have a good assortment of small Adult midge/emergers as well as BWO’s. There has been some success slow swinging leeches and buggers throughout the flats.

Boise River Fishing Report – In Town

We still have a few weeks left of prime wading conditions until spring run off hits and the river will become to high and unsafe to effectively fish. With the warmer temps, the rainbows are starting to get into that pre-spawn feeding habit and are looking to put on some weight for their annual spawn. This can give some great opportunities for spring time fishing here locally. The streamer bite has been picking up as fish are willing to move and become more aggressive to eat. Sculpin variations in olive, white, and natural color combinations will produce. If you’re a streamer junkie, the big articulated patterns could move that big Boise River Brown you’ve been after!

Nymphing will still be your go-to here locally, as the hatches are very sporadic and inconsistent at best. Generic patterns that consistently produce are your Hare’s Ears, Prince Nymphs, Copper Johns, and Zebra Midges. Sizes ranging from 16 down to 20s and even 22s on your midges. Any of your hot spot nymphs will work great too. With spring here, and run off in the near future, don’t be afraid to try your favorite worm pattern.

South Fork Boise Fishing Report – Tailwater

The South Fork will close down on April 1st-Memorial Weekend. If you’re looking to get out there, now is the time. Road conditions during the spring thaw can be quite muddy, so please take your time as you drop down into the dam and along the river corridor. Skwala nymphs are becoming active, and should be any day now that we start seeing some adults. Just because the adults aren’t quite out yet, doesn’t mean that running an Adult Skwala as a searcher pattern won’t turn some heads.

Depending on the day, you can find some heads sipping midges, and some BWO’s as well. With the water temps increasing, this should get the stonefly nymphs moving around so running a rubber leg stone with a small dropper should do the trick. Dead drifting and slow swinging streamers could move some fish as well. Get out while we have a few more weeks before it closes down!

Duck Valley Indian Reservation

We’ve all been waiting for the reservation to open back up! The time has come, and Mountain View Reservoir currently has open water to fish. There still is some ice around, but every day the ice will diminish and become completely open. Reports have been coming in with anglers finding success slow stripping leeches and buggers. And also the chironomid and balanced leech game under an indicator will produce fish when the stripping bite is slow.

Have a variety of leeches and buggers in olive, brown, and wine colors. For chironomid sizes, 10-14. Billy Shaw will open April 1st. We have a great selection of chironomids, balanced leeches, and buggers for stripping so stop by the shop and get equipped for some Stillwater fishing!
