Well we knew the 40-50 degree highs in February couldn’t last forever, and it looks like old man Winter has finally settled back in to this little corner of the world. As a reminder, the Upper Madison between Quake Lake and McAtee Bridge and Ennis Bridge to Ennis Lake closes to all fishing starting on March 1st, so Saturday will be your last chance to fish these stretches until the general opener on May 16th. Despite the cold weather, fishing has been very good throughout the Upper River and nymphs such as $3 Dips, Zebras, Hare’s Ears, eggs, and smaller Pat’s Rubber Legs have been taking some really nice fish over the last week or so. You can still find pods of trout rising to midges between 11:30 and 2:00 when the wind isn’t too much of a factor, and you’ll want to concentrate your efforts on the areas between Raynold’s and Lyon’s Bridge as the lower river around town can be a little icy depending on the day. Before the cold front moved in we had a great streamer bite going on and the CH Barely Legal has been just as good this Winter as it usually is during the other three seasons. Judging from the amount of eggs we’ve seen coughed up by fish, as well as the freshly cleared redds, there is already quite a bit of spawning activity from the resident rainbows around here so please watch your step while wading.
