The reservoir is slowly warming up and so is the fishing. We are continuing to catch crappie, but they have moved from slightly deeper water to shallows looking for cover and any bug action. We caught them on everything from small white streamers, damselfly nymphs to some small dry fly mayflies. Once we would catch one, there were usually a bunch all holding together. That’s what I love about this time of year fishing for crappie.
The smallmouth bass fishing is also in full swing right now with a lot of fish looking up and smashing poppers close to the bank. They are also on the eat with double streamer rigs. We are fishing a floating line with 10-pound maxima as leader and tippet. I am excited to say that I am seeing more and more carp pushing into their summer flats. Fly fishing for carp can be challenging but very rewarding when you get the eat. We are using 8 weight rods with a floating line and long leaders & using damselfly nymphs, crawfish imitations in a variety of colors and some basic leeches. We are sight fishing for most of the carp. C.J. Strike is an incredible fishery that surprises me every time I am on the water there. Come see what it’s all about.
Good luck out there and please let us know how TRR Outfitters in Eagle can help you out on fly selection, info, or to book a guided trip on CJ Strike.
